Gúanica Lighthouse Review
Another testament to how painfully little there is to do in Gúanica aside from relax and drink ice cold cerveza with the locals, is the Gúanica lighthouse around km-marker 4 on Highway 333 south from Highway 116. It's interesting enough for a six-minute visit, but once you've seen it, you've seen it, and you're done.
If you're going out that way, and you should since it's along the way to the Copamarina Hotel and the ferry out to Gilligan's Island, just keep your eyes peeled for it and be ready to make a quick stop. Can't miss it, it's off to your left as you head out, and it's plainly a lighthouse in ruins.
Ships have the benefit of computerized satellite navigation these days, so a lighthouse every 20-miles isn't a necessity, and it's been this way for, well, long enough for this place to fall to pieces.
It's an interesting visit. One almost gets the feeling like you're performing an autopsy on a skeleton. There's so little left, but you get the idea of what it once was. You have to park on the tiny strip of land just outside the chained off driveway, but a high step over it and you're within 30-feet of it, and you'll have the place all to yourself for, oh, about a second until your curiosity is satisfied.
It's not a destination, but it's on the way to a destination, and barely out of the way from a few more. If you're there anyhow, stop for a stroll, you'll enjoy it. This is not a place friendly to strollers or ADA requirements, but you can just about get the whole gist from the street anyhow, so I wouldn't sweat it.
