Every Puerto Rican Town Shares the Same Unique Charm
When you get to the heart of a small, old town, like Lajas, Yauco, Gúanica or Sabana Grande, you find a unique, antique charm. The sort of thing you've read about but can't quite express until you're there. You should plan to visit a few such towns on your trip, but there's no reason to go crazy with it, because the charm they have, they all have in common.
I'm sure the locals of Cabo Rojo feel them and their town is one of a kind and truly distinct from Hormigueros, but they'd be mostly mistaken. Better example is, when visiting San Francisco, you can choose to see Oakland while you're there, but do you really need to? Sure, it's different, but that isn't always enough of a reason to spend your time or money.
There are three Puerto Rico's you need to see; the old, the new and the natural.
The old you can do in a city or two. Unless you're looking to spend months here, a couple days in San Germán and Old San Juan should satisfy this desire. If you can schedule your visit around a patron saints festival you really should.
The new Puerto Rico is the busy city life of San Juan, and nothing else. Ponce tries to rival San Juan in modernity and antiquity, but falls short on both, and is a lot scarier and more run down.
For the natural, you can see the caves of Rio Camuy in a half-day, with the other half left to see the Arecibo radio telescope featured in the movie Contact. If you can get a day or overnight trip to Culebra or Viques, try, but know it will be pricy. Lastly you should hit the El Yunque rainforest, if you're so inclined. Not my cup of tea, but I'm assigned there next month, so we'll see how it goes.
