Hotel Coral by the Sea – A Fair Last Option

Our reservations in San Juan, Puerto Rico, were goofed up at the last minute. A staff member thought it was reserved, it wasn't, a conference was in town, and we were left scrambling at the last minute for a place to stay, and the first place we found was the decidedly cut-rate casa de slumber; Coral by the Sea.

The promotional material says it costs $60 to $95 per night, but let's start by absolving ourselves of that myth right about now. If there's a $60 room, I'm sure it's long gone, and if there are two, I'll eat my hat. The place wasn't crowded, yet the cheapest room was $98 on the third floor, with a nice water view of only the pool across the street.

The beds were fair but the WiFi was out everywhere but the lobby, and the ceilings are industrial office type ceiling tiles, aged, droopy and beyond depressing. The A/C worked fine, but the elevator took half a lifetime and is often filled to capacity the whole hour prior to checkout with people and their luggage.

It's convenient to the airport, but not so convenient to San Juan, since it's in Isla Verde, which is all the way down the end of the popular strip. What you'll pay in cab fare is enough to encourage you to step up the mere handful of bucks it will take to get a nicer place, because this one was a real disappointment. The staff was friendly enough, though not terribly professional, and for the money you're out, you'd be better off paying the difference to stay the hell out of there.

If you have enough time, try offering PriceLine.com $80 a night, and wiggle it up to $120. You're likely to find something better in the budget traveler price range, and you'll be much happier for the journey.

On the plus side, Coral by the Sea is just across the street from the Cockfights arena... assuming that could somehow be construed as a plus for you.

Basic summary, it's too pricey for what it is and where it is, and you owe it to yourself to pony up the couple extra bucks if you must, though smart shopping can get you a better place at the same price.
